Teacher Conferences

As the first quarter came to a close, the annual long awaited parent/teacher conferences were scheduled. Having one child in middle school and one in high school awarded us the opportunity to see a multitude of different teachers. The first teacher said something like this, “Austin is doing very well in my class, I enjoy having him, he participates well and maybe could even add more as his thoughts are insightful.” The next teacher’s comments were “Adriann is doing very well, she’s a joy to have in class, she participates well but could possibly even talk a little less.” This went on throughout the next few sessions and I found myself chuckling out loud as I would leave each room. As their Mom, I am very proud of their efforts and work the first quarter. However, I am also delighted in who God has created each of them to be. Different, yes, actually opposites in some respects yet alike in many others. I am thankful God has entrusted them to our care...for such a time as this.

This past week, I had my annual “I miss fall” moment. Autumn is by far my favorite time of the year in America. So many things make it a special time, the cool weather after hot Mississippi summers, football games, our anniversary, and the changing of the leaves to name only a few. In those moments, where I long to see the trees glowing with vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, I find myself looking back at pictures from Smoky Mountain trips gone by, bringing out the box in storage labeled “fall decorations” and baking pumpkin bread. Recently as my friend and I were walking one morning, we were amazed to find a tree in our neighborhood with a few red leaves. What a sweet gift God gave us, living right here in the middle of the tropics! It reminded me that Father loves me and cares about every detail of my life.

After an extended break from blogging, we're back! The blog began as a way to keep family and friends updated on our lives in Asia. We'd also like to share all that Father is doing to draw the nations to Himself. Psalms 105:1-5 says it best, "Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him, tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name, let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength, seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced."

On a personal note, these are a few family pictures taken a few months ago! My how much our children have grown. Austin is about to complete his sophomore year of high school and Adriann is finishing up elementary school. Next year - 7th grade, not sure if this Mom is ready for my kiddos to be in middle and high school! We are blessed...I thank God daily for the children he has entrusted to us for such a time as this.

Oh My! It seems the blog always gets pushed to the bottom of the "To Do List". As a child, I recall summer breaks being so long and my mother reminding me that when I got older, time would go more quickly. There's still 24 hours in a day, but the busyness of life certainly makes it seem to be flying. Guess Mom was right again!

Here's a glimpse into a few highlights from our life!

In September, we celebrated Dusty's 11 birthday with peanut butter cake. Dusty has been such delight to have as part of the family. You would think this dog was a baby, the way we ALL treat her.

As many of you know, Adriann has wanted to take piano lessons for quite some time. She saved her money to help purchase a piano and started lessons this past summer. She and a friend had a mini recital and showcased their pieces. Khruu Apple their teacher has done a wonderful job teaching them!

Loy Kratong Festival is a Buddhist celebration observed in October/November each year throughout Thailand. One aspect of this celebration is the floating of lanterns as scene below. This picture was taken when over 1000 lanterns were being released.

Prior to the release of the lanterns, a ceremony and meditation time was held to pay homage to lord Buddha.

July 2009 in review!

The 4th of July this year we went with friends to the Flight of the Gibbon, a zip-line tour through the rainforest outside of Chiang Mai. It was amazing and absolutely beautiful! We'd highly recommend it. That evening we celebrated with other US citizens at the American Consulate Independence Day celebration. Later in the month we rang in Jerry's 42nd birthday. Busy month, but great memories! We'll let the pictures speak now...

The Consulate celebration is always a lot of fun with games, great door prizes, entertainment, fireworks, Ballpark Frank hot dogs and American sodas that we're unable to get here. A big hit is Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper. Austin and Adriann have actually started liking Dr. Pepper with all the hype! Couldn't pass up a photo of Uncle Sam and Ronald McDonald - how much more American can you get!!

Buffalo Market

Yesterday, I went with a friend to the Buffalo market about 30 minutes south of our city. At first when hearing "...market", I thought it would just be another market, but after seeing this one, it was quite different than all the ones we shop at around our house! The buffalo market was huge, with all the normal items, fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meat, cloths, cleaning supplies, outdoor supplies, toys and much more. However, this market also sold used motorcycles and livestock as well; water buffalo, cattle and chickens. I happen to have my camera and thought you might enjoy a little Thai culture! The funny thing was that most of the vendors thought I was a tourist and were all so excited to have their picture taken back to another country! Here's to them.

This man was selling honey combs, which were quite expensive by Thai standards!

As you all know, snakes are not one of my favorite things...not even cut up and ready to eat!

Cow fat and intestinal fluids, yummy to eat (so they say) and adds a bitter flavor to meats!

Dried fish is sold at all the markets.

Peppers anyone!

Pickled fish. No, it's not like pickled cucumbers. Basically, salt is added to fish and it sits for 3 to 6 months before being sold as a tasty side dish. Yes, it smells just like you might think! My friend said that she heats hers up to cook the worms or other things that might be growing in it. As I was turning my nose up, she said 'oh, it's good and that's just adding protein'. I'll take her word for it and stick to baked, broiled or fried fish!

Farmers are the same, regardless of the culture! As we approached the livestock sales, men were gathered around in groups talking about the animals and which were the prize picks.

Lastly, this is picture that puts it all in perspective. The fruit for sell is called "Lucky Fruit" and is suppose to bring you good luck. Crowds were lined up to buy a piece. My heart broke as we watched people trying to buy luck for a hopeless future. May they one day all know it has nothing to do with luck but all to do with God's grace.

The Story of a Man!

There once was a man, a very hard working man This man's family was poor and he thus dropped out of high school in order to work full time to help support his family. The man met a girl and they fell in love. When she was 16 years old and he was 18, he went to her parents and asked if they could be married. Her parents agreed with one condition that she continue school. They married on October 31 and began a life together. Although the man was not formally educated, he was very smart and set out to make a better life for himself. He did what he knew best which was farming, producing crops such as soybeans, watermelons and wheat. His business knowledge flowed out positively through the way he ran the business.

He and his wife began a family after about four years of marriage, first with a daughter, then a son three years later. Would two children be all? As it is told, the man wanted one more, so the wife made a deal that if she could quit work then why not have another baby, so five years later they had their third child a daughter. This was your typical family who loved and laughed and worshipped together. But don't think it was a perfect family, because it certainly wasn't! The man can be remembered sitting in his chair looking out the window "thinking". He was a worrier, who was always concerned about the crops in the field or the weather outside that could hamper the crops. You see, this man had set a goal early in his life to save money for his family's future and sometimes that's a difficult thing to do with farming. Slowly but surely he was meeting that goal. He never wanted to forget where he came from but he often said he never wanted his family to have to make some of the sacrifices he had had to make.

One hot summer day, the man and his friend were going to look at one of his fields planted with soybeans The man was driving and did not notice the oncoming train before crossing the track. Their truck was struck and his friend died instantly. The man lived 12 hours. At 11:30 p.m. on July 16, 1982, the world lost the man who can be remembered as hardworking, loyal, honest, devoted, a friend, husband and father. This was not just any man, this man was my Daddy, Mayo Ponder. I am honored to have had him as my father and still miss him today. However, I am forever impacted by and thankful for the lessons he taught me in those precious years. One day we will meet again, but until then...

For several years now, Austin and Adriann have asked for a pet, preferable a dog. Because of our travel schedules we did not opt to have one. Recently, Jerry and I have been reconsidering, thinking why not. The kids made a great power point presentation to sell us on why they needed a pet and how they would take care of it, even breaking down the different duties of having one. While picking up a piano that we had purchased from a family moving back to the states, we saw Dusty and were told that they would need to find a home for her before moving. She's a 10 year old inside/outside dog that's part Cyprus poodle and part Australian terrier. We have agreed to watch the dog for one week as a trial before making our final decision. She is a real cutie and the sweetest dog. That's huge coming from me, the anti-pet person! We'll let you know later what the final decision is but after one day, it looks like she may have a new home!

Adriann's 10th Birthday

Adriann has arrived in double digits - she's 10 years old! We celebrated with a flower arranging party. Living in the tropics makes this very easy, fresh cut flowers can be found in abundance for very cheap. The girls all had fun designing some beautiful creations while learning about the basics of flower arranging. We got so carried away with the festivities that we didn't get many pictures - oops sorry family but here's what we did get!

What a fun t-shirt! Needless to say, our "southern" accents get frequently mocked here which we are quite accustomed to and don't really mind. So Adriann thought this shirt was fabulous! The back says "Bye Y'all from Mississippi". Great gift - thanks Aunt Sherry, Uncle Tim, Thomas and Marlee.

Is it gas you need? Well take your pick!! Recently while traveling we rented a fun little jeep to travel around the island. Running low on fuel, we stopped to get gas at a roadside Shell station. The great thing was that when the attendant finished he made certain that we got every ounce from the hose!

The next day we passed this stand selling gasoline by the bottle! Might have taken a few too many bottles to fill up.

After much time away from blogging, we thought an update on some recent happenings in our lives would be in order. During spring break, we traveled to the beach, which is always fun and very relaxing. It was really nice to have some down time with friends and family all while enjoying the beautiful beaches of Southern Thailand. This was a vacation with no agenda, therefore we went from the pool, to the beach, to the room for a movie and played lots of games!

Wii Fit Time!

Last year while in America, Austin used the money he had been saving to buy a Wii. We've had lots of family fun competing and playing together. Currently, the competition is most intense on Wii Fit! We each have our specialities. Austin does awesome in the strength training, especially push ups and side planks (thanks to Mr. Tommy). Adriann can hula hoop and soccer head with the best of them. Kelly has banked the most total hours and Yoga is her top area. Jerry, the competitive one dominates most of the balance games. Guess all together that would make us a well balanced family!! Lady Jennifer (AKA Adriann) preformed in a class play on Friday morning and did a fabulous job! All the drama for the past 9 years proved to be great practice for the performance. The class was studying medieval times and preformed 3 plays in addition to building castles. Busy times in 4th grade!

Have you ever had someone that every time you get together it feels like time stands still? You know, nothing really has changed, except maybe some physical things! Rhonda and I became friends in first grade at Mt. Olive Elementary back in 1972. Through the years, we've stayed in contact and remained friends. Like the old Michael W. Smith song says "Friends are friends forever..." Love you Rhonda and had a great time catching up in person while in Mississippi.

Life often catches us by surprise. This week I learned that a long time family friend, Stennett (Zack) Sanford had suddenly passed away leaving behind a wife of 25+ years, Shelia and three children. My heart breaks for this family, especially the children as it brings back memories of how tragedy struck my own family many years ago. Many things will change for the Sanford family but one thing will remain constant - God's unfailing love for each of them. This may have been a surprise to his family and friends but this did not catch God by surprise. He is sovereign and will use it to bring glory to Himself. Please join me in praying for this family not only today but in the days and weeks to come.

Lastly, it reminds me of the urgency of sharing God's love and grace with those who do not know him. If your life was suddenly taken today, would you be ready to see God face to face? It also clearly reminds me to keep my "I love yous" up to date. Have you said "I love you" today?

Family is very important to us and being in the states for Christmas was extra special. It was a joyous time and a year we won't soon forget. Celebrating Christmas in Thailand verses America was quite different in good and bad ways. The commercialization of the season in America is a bit disappointing. However, being with family and friends was incredible!

As our time in America comes to a close, we begin to reflect on all the wonderful experiences we've had over the past 5 months. The Sumrall community and school have been very welcoming to our family. As parents our prayer was that God would send good friends for Austin and Adriann, during this time. New friends have been made as well as many memories that will be cherished for years to come. Email addresses are already being exchanged and we look forward to staying in contact. Tonight we had the privilege of attending the high school band Christmas concert. They did an outstanding job preforming. To Austin's surprise they gave him a going away party following the event. What seems to be a minor thing, made lasting impressions on Austin as well as our entire family. Thank you, SHS Band family!

Thanksgiving Happenings

As we reflect on Thanksgiving, we are blessed to have been able to spend time with our families. Of course, we ate too much but this is a new week! Adriann made us a thankful bowl that we each listed things throughout the month of November for which we were thankful. Some included were family, friends made over the past few months, a home to live in, fun school days, eating out, freedom to worship the One True God, salvation and Jesus Christ. We truly are blessed!

As for the actual festivities, Jerry's family has a family reunion every Thanksgiving in Alabama. This year, there were over a hundred and most of his grandfather's family were in attendance. They are always great to take photos of each section of the extended family. It was great to reconnect with everyone!

On Friday, we skipped all the after Thanksgiving sales and spent the weekend with my (Kelly's) family. When the first grandchild was born, Mom began buying an ornament each year for each grandchild. Now 19 years later, she's keeping up the tradition but also gets the grands to put the tree up and decorate with the ornaments. Smart lady, huh! There are people in our lives that make lifetime impressions. Ms. Hilda (pictured in the orange shirt) entered my life in college while I was working as her assistant at Forrest General Hospital. We quickly became friends and I often referred to her as my college Mom. She was gracious and kind to listen to all the college drama a 20 year old could have or think she had! I also learned lots about her sons and family. What an awesome lady she was and still is! We have stayed in touch through the years and she was on my list to see while in the states. While speaking in Mobile, Jerry and I had the privilege to spend the day with Ms. Hilda and her sister. She hasn't changed at all, still has beautiful flower gardens, a lovely home and that warm inviting personality. Thanks for the day and all the fond memories!

Jerry and I are celebrating our anniversary today in East Tennessee! Over the past 18 years, we've laughed, cried, played, and worked together. There have been a lot of great times and even a few not so good but we've loved each other through it all. I can't imagine life without Jerry - I love him more every day!

We are just nuts about the Mitchell Farms Pumpkin Patch!

Today, we went to the Pumpkin Patch at a farm out from Collins, MS. It was wonderful! There was a ride through the farm explaining the equipment, crops grown and history. This brought back fond memories of my childhood days as my Dad was also a farmer. There were acres and acres of sunflowers, which were beautiful and added to the festivities.

Austin enjoyed the grass maze and Adriann had fun on a tire swing. We each came home with a pumpkin, so there should be plenty of pies, breads, muffins and such to come!

Football Fever!

Friday nights this fall have been spent at football games! There's nothing like High School Football games. Although the school we're at isn't having a great season AT ALL, it's still fun and with Austin in the band we've traveled to every game! We've also been to a few USM games. One Saturday began with a sunny beautiful day but the rains came at kickoff! We stayed until the bitter end and had a rain soaked good time! :) (You can see in the picture that by the end of the game not many folks had stayed to endure the elements! Must have been fair weather fans!!!)

Austin has enjoyed participating in the high school band this semester. The school has an excellent band program with 21 straight years of all superior ratings. This year was no different. They are not large in size, however the quality is superb! This past weekend, they took Overall Grand Champion as well as several other awards at the contest they entered, beating out some larger top notch schools.

Way to go Spirit! We are proud of you, Austin.

Beach Weekend

This past weekend we went to the beach with Jerry's family. Tropical Storm Fay left clouds and high winds that added to the pictures but didn't do much else. The rain held off and we all had a great time together. You can't go to the beach without getting pictures of all the grand kids together!

School Begins!

Austin and Adriann are attending Sumrall Middle and Elementary School this semester. Austin is in the marching band and loving it! Football season starts this Friday, so pictures will follow later. After much effort, we were able to get him in all the classes he will need to return to Grace in January. Adriann is having a wonderful time and is blessed to have her good friends mother as her teacher! Other than her first half of kindergarten, she has always attended Grace. After the first day of school, she came home with several insights! One was "why don't we have a foreign language?" Also, "we did not have Bible class." They are enjoying their time at Sumrall but it has reminded us of how thankful we are for Grace International School!

Watermelon Festival

A fond childhood memory was the annual Watermelon Festival. It's a time to eat all the watermelon you can handle, enjoy games, such as seed spitting and watermelon eating contests, music and the "dog days" of summer. This year Kelly's niece Breanne was Watermelon Queen and she made a beautiful one! Mississippi watermelon is the BEST in the world!

We celebrated Jerry's 41st birthday in Mexican Style, with Chiang Mai friends who were in Virginia. Several baskets of chips and salsa, fried ice cream as well as lots of laughter were on the menu!

The NBC Today show once did a series entitled "Where in the World is Matt Lauer?" That may be what you've been thinking about the lack of post lately, so here's our explanation even with a few photos! Austin and Adriann finished school on June 6th. After a couple of weeks of packing and playing, we headed to America arriving on June 28th. The first 24 hours were great then Jerry ended up with a kidney stone and had emergency surgery on July 4th. Not exactly how we expected to spend Independence Day!

One of the joys of attending an international school is the diversity of children. The final project for 3rd grade was for each child to present their home country. This was done using a display board, 5 minute speech and either authentic dress from your country or something that represents your country. There's really not a traditional dress for America other than maybe jeans and a t-shirt. She considered wearing a cowgirl outfit or something patriotic but in the end decided to go with something that represents America. She made a great Lady Liberty. Can't you see the resemblance? She also did beautifully on her presentation.

Border Run!

Yesterday we had the honor and privilege to travel to the border of Burma/Myanmar and Thailand. It's an all day trip but has beautiful scenery traveling through the mountains. Once there we had our passports stamped in Myanmar then walked back into Thailand. Chiang Mai has lots of foreigners so another blond girl isn't strange to see. However, anytime we travel outside our city, Adriann is flocked with Asians wanting their picture taken with her. Austin has also had his share of pictures taken. Sometimes, they ask, other times they try to sneak a picture. Notice the little girl who was pushed by her Mother into the picture with Austin and Adriann.

Adriann usually thinks it's fun and we've even taking a few of the shots too. It's comical to look back at your pictures and see your children with random Asian people.

Spring Break 2008

Austin and Adriann get a two week spring break each year. It is during the hottest season in Thailand, so a perfect time to get away! We traveled to the beach for the first few days where temperatures one day were 118 F, then the last 10 days we brought out the coats for the 32 degrees windchill. Enjoy the few shots we're able to share!

A Night to Remember

Unlike Walter Lord's 1955 book and later film, with the unfortunate ending of the Titanic sinking, Monday night was our "night to remember", in a positive sense. Jerry and I saw Harry Connick, Jr. in Bangkok for his "My New Orleans Asia Tour". It was truly incredible!

Our evening began with dinner, where we sat at a second floor window overlooking a courtyard filled with Thais, mostly young. As it turned out, we saw two concerts! The group playing in the courtyard was voted the Number one rock group in Thailand, having the #1 song and album of the year. We couldn't understand much, if any of what they sang but isn't that true for American rock concerts too! While watching, we made a unique observation. The Thai people are very reserved and quiet. This held true even at this concert! There were a few screams when the group first came out but the crowd was mostly quiet some singing along as they began. We were leaving the area and walked right up to the lead singer. Kodak Moment! You could have thought I actually knew who this guy was! Meet Dax!

The REAL concert was great! Harry Connick, Jr, that is. He mostly sang songs about New Orleans and Cajun country, as this was promoting the "Oh My, New Orleans" CD. It was delightful hearing all the New Orleans songs and live jazz music. Although I have to admit, it did make me a little homesick for the deep south, with the music, his talk of New Orleans, and that Cajun accent!

Here's a couple of picture we were able to get. They aren't great but the best you can get especially since camera's weren't supposed to be allowed! You will notice that there are people crowded at the front. The last song, he invited folks to come up and dance with he and the band. A small crowd, including us joined him, but most remained seated! I'm certain a few had thoughts of the obnoxious and loud foreigners!

What a night to remember! An evening filled with music, food, fun, laughter and the man I love! I am talking about Jerry - not Harry Connick, Jr!

Thinking back down memory lane, one thing that stands out was the protectiveness of my older sister and brother. Keith felt the urge after our Dad passed away to take up the "Fatherly" duties, especially in regards to hanging out and dating. He followed me to movies, around town and was always home when I left as well as when I returned for the evening. At the time it drove me crazy (as it did his girlfriend, now wife), I still think it was a little overkill but he wasn't always a saint so he knew what was out there for a teenage girl. Now 25 years later, I can say, thank you Keith for watching out for me. I always knew no matter what, I could depend on you being there. You are a great big brother.

Adriann and a friend had their hair braided while we were at our annual meeting. The first shot was taken the night it was braided and the second, a week later when it was taken down! The funny thing is that on Monday when Austin and Adriann returned to school it was picutre day! (I had no idea.) Adriann had begged to wear her hair one more day to show her friends and I agreed. Everyone has that one year of school pictures that you look back and say "what was I thinking?" This year may turn out to be Adriann's!

Long time no post! A true statement indeed. We have friends who blog almost daily, somehow I never seem to find the time for it or maybe I don't make the time. Either way, here's an update from the past few weeks.

Khun Phon recently celebrated her 46th birthday. In honor of it, Adriann and I baked her a cake. She always enjoys seeing me bake and loves to try the goodies. She and Khun Lyn do a Bible study at lunch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday's at our house. Isn't it just like women to have a snack or meal with Bible study? Guess that crosses all cultural lines!

Khun Phon is to the left and Khun Lyn in the center. If you write Thai, don't be too critical of the "Happy Birthday" on the cake. It's hard enough in English to write with icing, much less in Thai!

Last week, I was at Carrefour, comparable to Target and as I rounded the corner, there they were. The Christmas decorations were all out. All the metallic you would ever want from, garland, banners, bows, balls and trees. I couldn't resist the photo of the tree selection. My favorite was the full size red tree! There were a couple of traditional green trees in the back. But who wants green when you have all these to choose from! At the current exchange rate you could have the blue or purple tree for only $2.32.

Christmas Programs

This year the elementary had an International Christmas program. Each grade sang a traditional Christmas song from a different culture. It was really neat and made me think how wonderful heaven will be, with every nation worshipping Christ. Adriann's class sang a French Christmas song and all wore berets. This is Adriann and her friend Fer.

Austin's Christmas band concert was held on Friday night. The middle school band did a remarkable job! Austin's pretty easy to pick out of this picture.

Austin's track meet was the end of November. (Sorry for the delay in posting!) He did the hurtles and the ran in the 400 meter. He placed third in both and did great. All the practice paid off. Way to go Austin! We're proud of you.

Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong is a festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand. “Loi” means “to float”. “Krathong” is a raft about a hand span in diameter traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk, decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks etc. Many people will release a small raft like this on a river. In addition, fireworks and parades take place during the festival.

Friday night there was a parade near our neighborhood. There were lots of people in traditional dress carrying krathongs or lanterns.

This is one of the floats paying tribute to the King of Thailand.

The parade was at night and each float was beautifully lite. This picture was the truck behind the float that had the generators on it and the power lines connected to the float in front of it. The sight was so funny then we realized the men were pushing the truck! Each float had a generator truck following along behind.

Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays! These are a few of the things we are most thankful for this year. First of all, God's mercies which are new every morning, his grace and love showered on us. We are thankful for Jerry's improved health. It's been a long time since our last post. Sorry! Guess, we would not be considered avid bloggers. Austin and Adriann have completed their first quarter of the school year. Where does time go? At the end of the quarter they had a 10 day fall break. Six years ago Hume Lake, a Christian Youth Camp based in California, came to Chiang Mai to bring a ‘summer camp experience’ to hundreds of kids living in SE Asia. Needless to say, the camp was a huge success and a deal was struck with Hume Lake to make this an every two year event. So….this year they were back! Austin had a great time at the middle school camp during part of the fall break.

Hong Kong Disneyland is a mini version of Orlando, but was lots of fun! We all had our favorites - Space mountain, Buzz Lightyear laser ride, Lion King Show and the Teacups. Here's a few pictures...

Last Day of Summer Break

Today is the Queen of Thailand's Birthday, also known as Mother's Day. It's a national holiday with offices, schools and official buildings closed. With Jerry off work, we decided to go to Dio Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand at 8,500 feet above sea level. After seeing beautiful waterfalls, we reached the top where it was VERY cold and cloudy. It was a fun way to spend the last day of summer before Austin and Adriann begin school tomorrow.

Mongolian Trip

Mongolia is a beautifully, unique country of dry and desert land. It is often called the land of the blue sky. From the sunrises, throughout the day to the sunsets, the sky displays an incredible work of art. The most fond memory I will take away is the people. A smile is a smile anywhere you go and they all need to know Truth. One of the last days in the countryside, we were honored to partake of a feast which included milk products and goat with potatoes and carrots. The neat thing was that the live goat was killed, skinned and pressure cooked all within one hour! Pretty cool! I expected the meat to taste wild, however it was wonderful!

Milk products of every kind are eaten by the Mongols during the summer months. Yummy, if your a Mongol! The above picture is some of the items basting in the sun before dinner time.

This 74 year old lady lived in the Ger during the summer months. She was a very gracious host.

I also, had the opportunity to spend time with and encourage a group of girls from a local Body. They kept me young doing cartwheels and making pom-poms!

Jerry's 4oth Birthday!

Today is Sherry and Jerry's 40th birthday. We hear that Sherry is spending the day at the opening of the Choctaw Indian Fair. Jerry's day was filled with surprises. He began with breakfast cooked by Austin and Adriann. At work there was no way he would forget he's turning forty!

After work we had a surprise get together at a local Mexican restaurant with lots of friends. There, he was visited by an old lady who gave him tons of "tips" about growing old, as well as some little goodies he might need! Oops, she forgot that in Thailand you don't pick you teeth in public. Guess old people can get away with anything!!!

Happy Birthday, Jerry! I could never have asked for a better husband and friend or father for our children. I love you and look forward to seeing many more candles be added to the cake! Kelly

Fig Preserves

This week a friend gave me a jar of fig preserves! Someone had sent them to my friend who loves figs just not preserves. I was THRILLED! It has been years since I had them so I made biscuits the next morning. Yummy, yummy. I forgot how good they were. Austin has developed a taste for them as well. We're already planning to bring some from America on our next visit.

It's election time in Chiang Mai. A few weeks ago, the city had the mayoral election. It was fascinating to see how the system works in this culture. Some things are the same everywhere, such as candidates holding and hugging babies, shaking hands, making speeches at market areas, which would be like festivals in the American south and posters/signage. There is one difference that has been most interesting. Each candidate is given a number and on all their advertising, the number is always in a large square usually in the lower portion of the sign. The election was held and Candidate Number 2 came out #1!! We laughed and thought how it would NEVER work in America. No one would ever want to be any number other than number 1.

After a little set back, a foot message is always a way to feel better, because the elephant camp was awaiting. Debbie enjoyed a hug from one of the elephants before a ride on "Poo Billy" who is 29 years old! As most of you already know, Debbie LOVES flowers. The flower market and plant market brought lots of oohs and aahs, along with the naming of most of the flowers. The orchid farm has many varieties and was a must see after leaving the Elephant camp. We couldn't resist adding an orchid picture. We'll try to add more pictures in the next couple of days. Enjoy!

This is certainly not the most popular tourist attraction. However, Debbie has been able to experience health care, Thai style!! We have laughed and said that she just wanted to make sure Jerry has had adequate medical care over the past year. After 3 days, she is now feeling somewhat better. The stories she takes back to Mississippi will have a bit of a different flare from past visitors!

Hong Kong is a great place to visit! Last week, we were there for visa purposes, Jerry's medical checkup and company business. Although it was a busy trip, we were able to enjoy some of the sights and pleasures of the city. Austin overlooking the city from The Peak.

Adriann had a scavenger hunt birthday party on Saturday. Teams were sent in search of things such as finding 8 flowers, wrap each team member 8 times with toliet paper, eat 8 marshmellows and put 8 ponytails in someones hair. A great time was had by all!

Aunt Tommie Anne's team won in record time but were a bit exhausted from running around the neighborhood.
Aunt Susan's team did a wonderful job using creative methods of getting around (the car to get to the guard house!!!)

The party was topped off with games,cake and ice cream.

Spider-Man 3 came out in theaters today in Thailand. May 1 is Thai Labor Day, so no work and no school, great day to see the movie. It got positive reviews from Austin and Jerry!

6th Grade Field Trip

The Sixth grade at Grace takes an annual field trip to Bangkok. Austin has looked forward to this trip for months. Jerry went along as a chaperon this year. They left on the night train Thursday evening toured the Children's Discovery Museum on Friday then returned on the train, Friday night. Whew, fast trip but lots of fun. The boys in Jerry's group wanted to get up at 4:00 a.m. after just going to sleep! The joys of being young.

Wasn't there an old song "hot times in the city"? This the my alarm clock in our bedroom! 102 degrees at 5:08 p.m. The outside temperatures have been around 105 the past few days. This leads to lots of pool time! As Phil said, the heat now will make us thankful for the rainy season to come! It's all about perspective.

This past week we attended our annual conference. One of the highlights for Austin and Adriann is having wonderful teachers who volunteer their time to be with our children. This year, the group was from Auburn - thus the t-shirts. These folks were awesome! They loved on and invested time with our kids. Thanks Auburn for impacting our lives!

Southern Miss is on ESPN-Live in Thailand! It's 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning, Austin returned to school from the Christmas break and Jerry is at work, but I am lovin' Southern Miss football!!! We get few football games and never imagined seeing the Golden Eagles in GMAC Bowl.

We made and decorated a cake to celebrate Mom's 40th birthday. We surprised her by making a pinata that we played at her party. It was all fun and she enjoyed her day.

Merry Christmas!

We spent Christmas day at a local orphanage here in Chiang Mai helping provide lunch for the children and workers. There are 26 children in the home, 21 boys and 5 girls. Each year the children are asked what they would like for Christmas dinner and they request hamburgers! As we prepared to leave one of the workers from the home presented us with a gift for coming, with it was a card that the children had made. It was an absolutely beautiful card. Inside the card many of the children signed in Thai with a couple in English. One especially touched our hearts. It said "...In Christmas time, I hope you have a good time with your parent..." Although we won't physically be with our parents this Christmas, we want you to know we love you and are spending this Christmas with you in our hearts. We are blessed to have a wonderful, supportive family! We love you all.

Trip to Hong Kong

Austin broke his finger last week, which led us to Hong Kong for treatment. After his finger was set, we were out to have a little fun. It was Austin and Adriann's first visit and was a treat!

We first had to hit the Burger King in the Bangkok airport!

School Christmas Program

What an exciting day! The kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade had their Christmas program. The children told the Christmas story and sang lots of familiar carols. The story told in such a simple way was a great reminder that we should keep the holidays simple and focused on the real meaning - our Savior's Birth! Adriann was a narrator and did a fabulous job reciting her part of when the angels appeared to Mary and Joseph. We're a little (well a lot maybe) biased but she looked beautiful too.

I always wondered why most of the Christmas dresses in America were short sleeves in the winter. It's so that they can be sent to Thailand!! Thanks Aunt Debbie!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Well, Maybe not. As I walked into the mall today, I had visions of shoppers who lined up at 4:00 a.m. to get all the great sale items. Although, shopping is not one of my favorite past times, I do love to get in the crowds early on the Friday after Thanksgiving. However, in Chiang Mai there were no crowds, no sales and not many Christmas decorations this Friday. I did manage to find a small Christmas tree at Auntie Anne's.

In the upcoming months, Chiang Mai will host the Royal Flora International Horticulture Exposition to honor His Majesty the King. There is much publicity now to promote the event which will have over 30 countries exhibiting. This past weekend the mall had many local floral designers on hand with their handiwork. Adriann was fortunate to receive this "Princess" made from flowers. We look forward to seeing the show and sharing some of the exhibits with you.
